Cost of a campaign by number of recipients, for messages that fit in one, two or three segments, when you top up exactly the credits it needs. Planning one? Use the bulk SMS campaign checklist.
| Recipients | 1 segment | 2 segments | 3 segments |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | Rs 800 | Rs 1,440 | Rs 2,160 |
| 5,000 | Rs 3,250 | Rs 5,800 | Rs 8,700 |

| 100,000 | Rs 53,000 | Rs 106,000 | Rs 159,000 |
Example: an OTP or order update under 160 characters sent to 10,000 customers is 10,000 segments, or Rs 5,800.
You are billed per segment, not per message. Latin text (GSM-7) holds 160 characters in a single segment and 153 in each segment once a message is split. Sinhala, Tamil and emoji switch the message to Unicode, which holds 70 and 67. What counts as one SMS explains it with examples.
| Segments | English (GSM-7) characters | Sinhala / Tamil (Unicode) characters | Credits per recipient |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–160 | 1–70 | 1 |
| 2 | 161–306 | 71–134 | 2 |
| 3 | 307–459 | 135–201 | 3 |
| 4 | 460–612 | 202–268 | 4 |
The composer and the /api/v3/sms/estimate endpoint show the segment count and the
exact cost before anything is sent.
A low per-message figure on a rate card is not the same as a low bill. Compare these six costs across any bulk SMS provider before you choose, or read the full guide to choosing an SMS gateway in Sri Lanka.
A 200-character English message is 2 segments. Ask whether the quoted price is per segment or per message. Here it uses 2 credits per recipient.
A plan fee or minimum spend raises the real cost of a small campaign. e-SMS has neither.
Credits that lapse are money lost. e-SMS credits stay on your account until used.
Unicode holds 70 characters per segment, not 160, so the same text can cost more. Look for a price shown before you send.
Registering a brand sender name may carry a one-time charge. Here sender-name registration is free.
Check whether you pay for messages that never leave. Credits for a send the gateway rejects are returned to your balance automatically.
Prices change, so check the current rate card of any provider you are comparing rather than relying on a claim. To compare fairly, use the total cost per delivered segment, including monthly fees, minimum spend, credit expiry, sender-name fees and Unicode billing. e-SMS publishes its full price on this page: from Rs 0.53 per segment, taxes included, no setup or monthly fee, no expiry, and sender-name registration is free.
From Rs 0.53 per SMS segment. The rate is set by the size of each top-up: Rs 0.80 (top-ups under Rs 1,000), Rs 0.72 (Rs 1,000+), Rs 0.65 (Rs 2,500+), Rs 0.58 (Rs 5,000+), Rs 0.53 (Rs 10,000+). A message of up to 160 characters is one segment. Taxes are included, and the rate is the same on Dialog, Mobitel, Hutch and Airtel.
No. There is no monthly fee, setup fee or plan. You buy credits when you need them, a bigger top-up buys each credit cheaper, and you pay only for the segments you send. The smallest top-up is 100 credits (Rs 80).
No. Credits stay on your account until you use them, and credits from a failed send are returned automatically.
Per segment, like any other message, but a Unicode segment holds only 70 characters (67 once a message spans several segments) against 160 (153) for Latin text. A 100-character Sinhala message is 2 segments, so it uses 2 credits per recipient: 2 x Rs 0.53 = Rs 1.06 at the lowest rate.
Long messages that spill into extra segments, and emoji or non-Latin characters that switch a whole message to Unicode. The composer and the estimate endpoint show the segment count and cost before anything is sent.
